MA/PhD in Theatre
The University of Minnesota offers a unique graduate program drawing from the varied research expertise of its core faculty. Together, we are committed to the study of theatre and performance as practices of social, cultural, and political consequence. Our work in theatre historiography and performance criticism examines the stakes of acts of representation, movement, and meaning-production both within and without the discipline of theatre.
- Professor Cindy García is a dance theorist, performance ethnographer, and playwright. Her research interests include the cultural politics of migration, race, and racialization, and the gendered performances of latinidad in urban libidinal economies.
- Professor Michal Kobialka is known internationally for his discipline defining work in theatre historiography. He has published widely on medieval representational practices,18th century thought and performance, the 20C European avant-garde, in particular the theatre of Tadeusz Kantor.
- Professor Sonja Arsham Kuftinec is an expert on performance and social change, and community-based theatre. Her most recent book examines the role of theatre in facilitating encounters between youth in major geo-political conflict zones such as the Balkans, and Israel-Palestine.
- Professor Margaret Werry’s work focuses on the intersection of political theory and performance in the global culture industries. She writes about the Asia-Pacific region, engaging with questions of ethnic politics and nationalism in sites such as museums, cinema, diplomacy, cultural policy and tourism practice.
Graduate students also draw on the specializations of visiting faculty (Megan Lewis, Cipriana Petre), faculty in the Dance Program (Ananya Chatterjea, Diyah Larasati), and over 30 affiliate faculty with interests in theatre, performance, and theory, across the University of Minnesota.
